The Highlands, 2019
Oil on canvas, 66’’ x 156’’
The Highlands is a landscape of my own dreams, the realm throughout which my unconscious thoughts walk, act, exist. But laying bare the unconscious to be digested, understood, and interpreted undermines the notion of the unconscious completely, so instead, every scrawl of poetry, every reminiscence, every blip of a nightmare, is erased by paint. What you see now is a veil that hides, protects, obscures; but you see a layer that, by the nature of paint, highlights the text, as well. It maps for you, the viewers, exactly where to look, exactly the things you should not or cannot read or regard.
