The Highlands, 2018-2019

Oil on canvas, 66’’ x 156’’

The Highlands began as a geographical landscape of my own dreams, the mapping of a realm throughout which my unconscious thoughts walk, act, and exist. Yet laying bare the unconscious to be digested, understood, and interpreted undermines the notion of the unconscious completely, so instead, every scrawl of poetry, every reminiscence, every blip of a nightmare, is covered by a painted skin. The final product is a veil that hides, protects, obscures, but a layer that, by the nature of paint, highlights the text, as well. It maps for you, the viewers, exactly where to look, exactly the things you should not or cannot read or regard.
